"The desire to fly is an idea handed down to us by our ancestors who, in their grueling travels across trackless lands in prehistoric times, looked enviously on the birds soaring freely through."

About

General

This project was assigned for our engineering graphics class at the College of San Mateo. We were given approximately 3 weeks to complete our project.

Materials Given

Objectives

  • Utilize CAD software to assist in design process

  • Design a mini-drone frame to optimize the payload capacity

  • Utilize modeling and simulation capabilities of CAD software to analyze and optimize design

  • Efficiently design drone chassis within due dates and requirements

Requirements

  • Full drone assembly created in Fusion360

  • Complete set of working drawings

  • At least one 3-D printed component of the drone assembly

  • Website documenting project

  • In-class presentation

Design

Design

The design process was a series of trial and error; if one model failed, we went back to the drawing board and made necessary adjustments. In one case, we decided it would be best to start over from scratch, resulting in multiple model builds.

Previous Models

We printed a total of 6 models, each one being improved from the last print

One filament on the Ultimaker2+ measured 0.4mm, our parts were required to be at least 2 filaments thick (0.8mm)

On average, each print was completed in 1.5 hours

Analysis

In order to ensure the quality of our design, we utilized the "simulation" environment in Fusion360 to perform a stress analysis and displacement study on a simplified area of our model. From the results of this study we then went back into our model and made changes to maximize durability but also minimize material used.

First we simplified our model, assuming symmetry, so the results would be accurate throughout the whole model
